Alor Setar is the state capital of Kedah, a state in Peninsular Malaysia. It is the second largest city in Kedah, after Sungai Petani. Alor Setar is located along the main travel corridor from Malaysia to Thailand, as a result, it is a major transportation hub in the northern Peninsular Malaysia. Alor Setar is one of the most important commercial and industrial centers in Kedah. There are various international and national-level commercial banks and insurance companies established their branches here in the city. Agricultural industry, or rather rice production used to be the core economic in Alor Setar. However, in the recent years, the local economy was also driven by the primary-based industry, as well as the services industry. Other industries such as manufacturing, commerce and retail, hospitality and tourism, financial services, food processing and fishery industry has started to boom too.
